Miguel Ángel Perera

Today, Miguel Ángel Perera remains one of the most solid figures in contemporary bullfighting. Born in Puebla del Prior and trained in the Badajoz school, he rose to prominence with a brilliant alternativa in 2004. His concept—built on temple and power—led him to historic performances, such as the two Puertas Grandes in Madrid that sealed his status as a figura. Perera is a torero of conviction, one who lowers his hand and commands without theatrics, and he continues to be an essential name in every major feria.

Biography

There are matadors who burst onto the scene like a storm, and others who settle into the profession as an undeniable truth. Miguel Ángel Perera, born on November 27, 1983 in Puebla del Prior (Badajoz), belongs to that lineage of toreros who don’t need to raise their voice for the art of bullfighting to speak for them. His career—long, solid, and full of memorable afternoons—proves that perseverance can also be a form of artistry.

His training began at the Escuela Taurina de la Diputación de Badajoz, a cradle of Extremaduran talent where he quickly stood out for his ability to read the charge of a bull and for a natural temple unusual in someone so young. Teachers still recall his obsession with repeating the same move over and over until it “felt exactly as it should.”

A vocation born between open fields and silence

Perera grew up surrounded by the countryside and fighting bulls, and perhaps that is why his toreo carries that natural depth that only comes from listening to the animal since childhood. He wasn’t a prodigy by chance—he was a prodigy because he lived for this. His humble, hardworking family supported him quietly, aware that the boy possessed an uncommon determination.

Triumphs that lifted him to the top

His alternativa took place in Badajoz in 2004, with Julián López “El Juli” as padrino, and from that moment his career became a succession of important afternoons. But if there is a year that marked a turning point, it was 2008, when he walked out through the Puerta Grande of Las Ventas twice in the same season, a feat reserved for very few.
