Doña María Loreto Charro Santos Breeding
Loreto Charro: the story of a Salamanca stud farm shaped by the evolution of the Domecq bloodline
There are cattle herds whose history begins when a branding iron is applied to a calf’s hide. And there are others whose true history dates back much further. Loreto Charro belongs to the latter group. Its current name is linked to the ‘campo bravo’ of Salamanca, but behind it lies a lineage of cattle breeding that has its roots in the 18th century and has passed through various owners, bloodlines and stages of selection.
Today, the herd owned by Mrs María Loreto Charro Santos grazes in the Campo Charro, on the Peña de Cabra estate, in the municipality of Narros de Matalayegua, Salamanca. The herd is registered with the Royal Union of Fighting Bull Breeders under the code UIU, with a blue, white and red emblem and the ‘orejisanas’ ear mark on both ears. Its representative is Fernando López Martín.
But to understand what Loreto Charro really means, one must look back much further.
Owner and representative of Loreto Charro
The herd is owned by Ms María Loreto Charro Santos, whilst Fernando López Martín is listed as the herd’s representative to the Union of Fighting Bull Breeders. The brand thus retains the surname that has given the herd its name since the early 1990s.
It is certainly curious that behind a name we now associate with Salamanca lies such a long history of family and cattle breeding. In the world of fighting bulls, surnames carry weight, but even more weight is given to the decisions made generation after generation regarding the selection of cows and bulls.
Finca Peña de Cabra, home to the Loreto Charro bull
The bulls and cows of Loreto Charro are currently reared on the Peña de Cabra estate, situated in Narros de Matalayegua (Salamanca), within the landscape of the Campo Charro, where extensive rearing is an integral part of the very character of the land.
And here lies one of the keys to understanding a fighting bull herd: before reaching the bullring, and even before being selected for a bullfight, the bull has spent years in the countryside. The estate is not merely an administrative location. It is the setting where much of that silent selection process takes place, which ultimately defines a herd.
Loreto Charro’s emblem and motto
Loreto Charro’s identity is also reflected in its cattle markings.
- Colours: blue, white and red.
- Ear markings: ‘orejisanas’ on both ears.
- Acronym: UIU.
- Rancho: Peña de Cabra, Narros de Matalayegua, Salamanca.
These are details that may seem secondary to the casual observer, but in the world of fighting bull breeding they form part of a true identity card. The branding, the colours and the ear markings accompany the animal from the pasture to the bullring.
A story that begins with Manuel Aleas
Here we come to one of the most interesting aspects of cattle breeding. The historical origins of Loreto Charro date back to 1788, when Manuel Aleas founded a cattle herd in Colmenar Viejo. Over time, that herd passed through various hands until it came into the possession of the branch linked to the García Gómez family, who incorporated the surname Aleas into its name.
In 1931, part of that herd – specifically the herd belonging to María del Carmen – was acquired by Amador Santos Sánchez. He subsequently introduced bulls from José María Galache, and from 1954 onwards, the herd began to be registered in the name of Manuel Santos Galache. In 1989, it came to be registered in the name of his heirs.
The story took yet another turn in 1990, when a herd of cows and a stud bull were purchased from Vicente Charro, originally from Atanasio Fernández. From then on, the ranch began to be advertised under the name María Loreto Charro Santos.
The brand’s official date of establishment is 9 April 1933, the date of its presentation in Madrid.
This is an important distinction: whilst the history of its origins dates back to the 18th century, the ranch’s official date of establishment is 1933. In the world of bullfighting, both dates are significant, although they do not mean the same thing.
From Atanasio Fernández to the Domecq bloodline
The genetic evolution of Loreto Charro did not end there. During the 1990s, new cattle were introduced. In 1991, a batch of cows and bulls was acquired from the heirs of Atanasio Fernández and, in 1992, another batch from the Sepúlveda herd.
Then came one of the major turning points in its history.
In 2001, the previous herd was phased out and replaced with cattle from El Pilar, of Juan Pedro Domecq-Díez lineage, according to the historical record maintained by Servitoro. The Royal Union of Breeders currently lists the lineage as Domecq via El Torreón/Garcigrande, a reference that also appears in other recent bull-breeding records.
Beyond this evolution of breeding lines, there is one common element: the Domecq bloodline. This is the genetic foundation that today places Loreto Charro amongst the major branches of the contemporary ‘campo bravo’.
And perhaps that is the most interesting aspect of the herd: it is not a static history. The brand has gradually transformed itself through acquisitions and selective breeding until it has forged its own identity within the Domecq family.
What is the Loreto Charro bull like?
To describe a bull solely on the basis of its genetic lineage would be an understatement. The true picture of a breeding herd emerges when its animals step into the bullring.
In recent years, Loreto Charro has presented bulls with substance, bulk and fine conformation – characteristics that have been highlighted in various reports. In San Miguel de Valero, for example, a bullfight in 2024 was described as featuring bulls of great bulk and deep conformation, whilst one of the young bulls, Pajarero, was honoured with a lap of honour.
Also in Peñaranda de Bracamonte, in 2025, the bull Orador – number 20 and weighing 500 kilos – stood out for his ferocity, pedigree and nobility during Ismael Martín’s performance.
And in Azpeitia, in July 2026, a bullfight featuring the Loreto Charro breed offered several opportunities for victory and enabled Samuel Navalón to exit through the Puerta Grande after cutting off three ears.
These are different episodes, different bullrings and bullfighters with their own approaches, but they all help to illustrate a fundamental point: a bull-breeding farm is ultimately judged in the bullring. The paperwork may speak of bloodlines, genealogies and percentages of blood; it is the bullring that has the final say.
A livestock farm with deep-rooted traditions and an eye to the future
Loreto Charro is a fine example of the adaptability that has enabled many cattle-breeding operations to survive for decades. Its history began long before it was known by the name we recognise today, and it went through various stages before reaching its current Domecq lineage.
From Manuel Aleas to María Loreto Charro Santos, from the ancient roots of the brand to the current breeding cows and bulls, there are almost two and a half centuries of livestock history that explain why a brand cannot be judged solely on the basis of a single bullfight.
Because the fighting bull is, above all, memory. A memory of a cow, of a bull, of a decision made decades ago and of a selection process that perhaps no one witnessed. Every bull that enters the ring carries with it a part of that past.
And at Loreto Charro, that past is particularly long. The true history of the brand does not end when the sixth bull emerges from the pen. That is, in fact, where another one begins.
