History of the town of Alcalá de los Gazules

Its Roman past left the very ancient Bronze document of Lascuta, on the hillside where today the old quarter slides, elegant and at the mercy of the castle.

After the Muslim conquest, the town was given the name Qalat at Yazula. The town raised a Christian flag again in 1264 when it was conquered by Alfonso X the Wise (Alfonso X El sabio), in whose chronicles he baptised the place with its present name.

When are the fiestas in Alcalá de los Gazules held?

St. George's Day is celebrated on 23 April. Those attending can enjoy a hot chocolate and take part in the release of heifers.

The remains of the Muslim castle and its Gazules gate stand just a few metres from the town hall and the main parish church of San Jorge. Inside, beautiful pieces of goldsmith's work are on display. Very close to the church of San Jorge is the old convent of Santa Clara (16th-17th century), of which the cloister and the tower that was the chapel are still preserved.
