The Illescas Bullring is in the province of Toledo, which is part of the Autonomous Community of Castile-La Mancha, bordering the Community of Madrid, 46.7 kilometres from the centre of Toledo (41 minutes by car) and 35 kilometres from Madrid.
It is one of the most modern covered bullrings in Spain, which gives it the opportunity to hold a multitude of bullfights throughout the year, as well as many other activities and events such as concerts and festivals.
Bullfighting in Illescas is one of the first of the season with the Feria del Milagro, which is held in March. There are also some smaller celebrations during Illescas' patron saint fiestas in honour of Nuestra Señora de la Virgen de la Caridad (Our Lady of Charity), in August, and also during the month of September.
The Illescas Bullring was officially opened in December 1997, replacing the bullfights held in temporary bullrings set up by the town hall or by bullfighting entrepreneurs.
The inauguration of the bullring included a line-up of bullfighters featuring César Rincón, "El Cid" and César Jiménez, with bulls from the Buenavista bull-ranch.
It is a third tier bullring that can hold 5,280 people, and has become very popular in recent years, hosting important events such as the "Corrida Total" and various charity festivals. Many people from Madrid come to Illescas to spend the day and enjoy the bullfights. They set up a marquee for lunch, next to the bullring, with free drinks and snacks on admission.
Illescas Bullring is on Avenida Toreros number 3, on the outskirts of Illescas, but it is perfectly well connected.
The bullring was a sell-out for the first time in its history in 2017, when the Milagro bullfight on 11 March saw the reappearance of Pepe Luis Vázquez, accompanied by Morante de La Puebla and José María Manzanares, with bulls from the Don José Vázquez bull-ranch. The sixth bull, "Fusilero", was spared by the bullfighter from Alicante.
Although the bullring is owned by the Town Hall, the company that runs the bullring in Illescas is Maxitoro, led by its manager Maximino Pérez, who has been granted permission to organise bullfights in the town until 2026.
Since the arrival of Maxitoro, the Illescas Bullring has enjoyed its best years, recovering after a complicated period between 2014 and 2015, which was its worst period.
The Feria del Milagro (Miracle Festival) in Illescas is the main festival in this town in Toledo, and has become one of the main events at the start of the bullfighting season in Spain, which is held every year in March, with both bullfights and "rejones" mounted bullfights.
The Fiestas del Milagro commemorate an event that took place in 1562, when a young crippled girl called Francisca de la Cruz went to pray to the Virgin of Charity and emerged healed from the chapel. Since then, the people of Illescas celebrate the first miracle of their patron saint every 11th March.
The bullring company, Maxitoro, recently transformed it into the Feria del Milagro (Miracle Fair), and now it is held twice instead of once after the Corrida de la Primavera (Spring Bullfight). The occasion has become a big event, bringing together bullfighting stars and many well-known faces, making it difficult to get tickets.
The main reason is that it is one of the first bullrings to open the Spanish bullfighting season. It is an excellent opportunity to see the bullfighters reappear after several months of rest and to see how fit they are.
It is also one of the most modern and innovative bullrings in Spain, with a very different atmosphere to that of the more traditional venues.
As one of the first bullrings to open the season, tickets for Illescas are sold out quickly, which means that you shouldn't wait until the last minute to buy them, as it is common to see the "sold-out" sign hanging on the entrance.
