On 12 September 2025, the bullring of Baza (Granada) witnessed an unforgettable afternoon. Local rejoneador Sebastián Fernández, together with matadors Fortes and Borja Jiménez, offered a performance of great artistic quality which ended as a true trophy festival: ten ears and three tails were awarded. Each of them, in their own style, left a lasting mark on the bastetano arena.
Chronicle of the Event
Expectation was high in Baza, with more than half the seats occupied for a mixed festival that exceeded all expectations.
Sebastián Fernández: Commitment and Connection with the Crowd
The local horseman came out determined from the very first moment. In his opening act, he received his bull dramatically at the portagayola on Seda Gris, later excelling with a vibrant banderillas display on California. The bull, rather static, forced him to do everything himself. Despite some missed attempts with the rejón de muerte, he managed to cut an ear.
He returned for the fourth of the afternoon with a masterful display. Riding Luna de Miel, Judío and Atrapasueños, he thrilled the crowd with pirouettes, cabrioles and short banderillas placed with precision. A perfectly executed killing stroke earned him two ears and a tail.
Fortes: Truth and Determination
The malagueño produced one of his most rounded performances with the first of his lot. He started by handling the cape with finesse, finishing his verónicas with beautiful half-passes. With the muleta, he delivered a heartfelt faena, beginning on his knees and gradually building with patience and composure against a bull that demanded subtle handling. His dedication was rewarded with two ears after a sword thrust and descabello.
In the fifth, he faced a difficult bull that never lowered its head and charged defensively. Fortes responded with calm bravery, standing his ground and asserting his authority with the muleta. In the final stages he pressed courageously close, drawing strong support from the stands. After a killing stroke and descabello, he was awarded one ear.
Borja Jiménez: A Torero in His Prime
The Sevillian was the great triumphator of the evening. With his first bull, he delivered a complete lesson in bullfighting: composure, authority and depth. From his opening passes against the barrier to the closing desplantes of absolute dominance, Borja showed maturity and poise. A clean sword thrust brought him the maximum trophies: two ears and a tail.
His second bull, the sixth of the afternoon, was more reserved, requiring each pass to be fought for. Borja managed it with patience and strong technique, producing several excellent natural passes. Once again, he displayed the great moment he is enjoying, keeping control throughout and ending with daring desplantes. Another tail crowned his triumph and ensured his exit on the shoulders.
The public celebrated all three toreros with a joint triumphal exit through the puerta grande, confirming once again the importance of the Baza fair in Granada’s bullfighting calendar.
