There is a widespread assumption among bullfighting fans that the season comes to an end with the final days of September. At that point, thoughts often turn prematurely to statistics, season reviews and the long winter ahead.
Yet those who experience bullfighting at its purest know that the European season does not end in the offices, nor is it brought to a close simply because autumn has arrived. The season truly comes to an end when, well into October, the final bull is dragged from the golden sands of the Coso de la Alameda.
Jaén is the final destination.
Each year, the San Lucas Fair arrives not as a forced epilogue, but as one last great opportunity for bullfighting fans to enjoy the season. Tauroemoción has once again recognised the importance of this traditional event and has put together two highly attractive line-ups for 2026, combining different bloodlines with experience, courage and artistry.
The quality of the programme alone makes a trip to the capital of the province of Jaén worthwhile.
Victorino Martín takes centre stage on 11 October
On that day, the famous grey bulls (cárdenos) of Victorino Martín, renowned for their presence, character and ability to generate excitement, will await in the bullring.
Facing them will be a mixed line-up combining experience and proven expertise.
Opening the afternoon on horseback will be Diego Ventura, one of the leading figures in rejoneo, taking on a demanding challenge.
On foot, the Jaén crowd will welcome back the elegance and experience of Manuel Jesús “El Cid”, alongside Manuel Escribano, whose ability, courage and outstanding current form make him another major attraction.
It is a line-up of experienced matadors ready to face the challenge of the legendary Victorino Martín bulls.
A powerful second date on 17 October
Six days later, on Saturday 17 October, the Coso de la Alameda will offer a very different but equally compelling afternoon.
The bulls will come from the prestigious El Parralejo breeding operation, with three matadors known for their commitment and ability to produce memorable performances.
The spectacular style and long-standing connection with audiences of David Fandila “El Fandi” will be joined by the remarkable purity and authority of Emilio de Justo, one of the most established figures in the current bullfighting world.
Completing the line-up will be the pure style and calm courage of Huelva-born David de Miranda.
More than just bullfighting
A visit to the San Lucas Fair is also the perfect excuse to discover a unique city that is often overlooked by traditional tourist itineraries.
Jaén, home to the world’s largest sea of olive trees, offers visitors an exceptional combination of history, culture and gastronomy.
Wandering through the streets of the historic La Magdalena district, admiring the imposing Renaissance Cathedral — a masterpiece associated with architect Andrés de Vandelvira — or watching the Andalusian sunset from the historic Santa Catalina Castle are all perfect ways to begin a day that ends at the bullring.
And there is, of course, Jaén’s famous tapas culture. Its bars, squares and streets provide countless opportunities to enjoy local food while discussing the day's action in the bullring.
The season is not over yet
So don’t rush to put your hat away or start looking back on the season just yet.
The call of the bull is still ringing loudly across southern Spain. Don’t just hear about it afterwards: come and experience it for yourself.
Winter may be long, but the final great chapter of the European bullfighting season will be written in Jaén.
May fortune be on everyone's side at the Coso de la Alameda.
